Thanksgiving is but a memory

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone and all I'm left with (besides left-overs) is tight clothes!!  I have got to get back to eating better!!  Why is that so hard??

I want to share a few Thanksgiving memories.

These are cards I made and sent.  Similar but different ribbon.

This is a card I sent to my friend, Judy.  That Gobble stamp made it so easy this year!

This is from Carol, my SU upline.  The sentiment is from a SU wheel that she cut apart.

This is from a good stampin' friend, Vicki.

This is from my Texas friend, Margaret.

And here is our table on Thanksgiving!

Aren't the flowers beautiful?  They are from our good friends, Sharon & Bob.  They usually spend Thanksgiving with us, but this year went to Texas instead to spend it with Sharon's sister.

These are placecards I made (notice .... no names so I might be using them again next year!!).  I did let them take the matchbox treats home with them.  I filled them with Breast Cancer M&M's in memory of my sister, Debra who died from breast cancer 2 years ago at Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  I will be welcoming my family to my home later today for a Thanksgiving celebration.  I hope you have a wonderful day ... and don't eat too much!!

We Give Thanks

Our Father in Heaven,
We give thanks for the pleasure
Of gathering together for this occasion.
We give thanks for this food
Prepared by loving hands.
We give thanks for life,
The freedom to enjoy it all
And all other blessings.
As we partake of this food,
We pray for health and strength
To carry on and try to live as You would have us.
This we ask in the name of Christ,
Our Heavenly Father.

Elvis and Tanglewood Festival of Lights

Yesterday was a Girls Day Out in our family.  My mom, my two sisters and my daughter drove to Greensboro to the Barn Dinner Theatre to see ELVIS!!  It was a great show!  Tribute artist Stephen Freeman had a wonderful voice and he had Elvis's moves down!!  I would highly recommend this show if you get a chance!

My mother was mesmerized when he came to our table to give us all a smooch!

Don't know what that white dot is on his face - think it's a flash or something - it wasn't on his face at the time!

After the show, I drove over to see if I could find the apartment complex Sonny and I lived in when we met.  At the time, it was a Singles Only Complex.  Well, surprise, surprise, I found it!!  It's not a place I'd live in today - still has window unit AC's in the windows and the iron railings on the balconies is pretty rusty!  There was a swimming pool in the center when we lived there which is gone now and there were several additional buildings added on.  But, it sure brought back some memories!  Even my sisters remembered visiting me there ... when they were about 12 years old!!

From Greensboro, we drove to Lewisville to Enchanted Cottage, a huge stamping/scrapbooking store.  The only other time I had been there, they were closing in about 15 minutes!  This time, we had about an hour to shop (not that my Mom and non-stamping sister loved that!).

On the way home, we passed the Tanglewood exit.  Since none of us (except Mom) had ever seen the Christmas lights there, we took a detour and drove through the park.  It was wonderful!  Another place I'd recommend to you if you're in the area.

Tanglewood Park's Festival of Lights began in 1992.  The first Festival of Lights in 1992 was a 1.5 mile route with only twenty five displays. Today the route has grown to just under 4 miles with one hundred eighty displays, of which seventy are animated.  Tanglewood begins setting up displays during the month of August to be ready for this large scale event which begins in mid November.  There are now over approximately a million individual lights that complete Tanglewood’s Festival of Lights.   Tanglewood’s Festival of Lights has been selected as a Top 20 Event in the Southeast and a Top 100 Event in North America

Black November

When I was a young turkey, new to the coop,
My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop,
Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,
And he told me there was something that I had to know;
His look and his tone I will always remember,
When he told me of the horrors of..... Black November;
"Come about August, now listen to me,
Each day you'll get six meals instead of just three,
"And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin,
And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin;
"And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed,
In'll burst the farmer's wife, and hack off your head;
"Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald 'n pink,
And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin' in the sink;
"And then comes the worst part!" he said not bluffing,
"She'll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing".
Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat,
I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,
And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked,
I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked;
I began a new diet of nuts and granola,
High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola;
And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes,
I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes;
I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half,
And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;
But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath,
As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death;
And sure enough when Black November rolled around,
I was the last turkey left in the entire compound;
So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap;
I haven't a worry! , so I eat and I nap;
She held me today, while sewing and humming,
And smiled at me and said: "Christmas is coming..."

Monday Mailer - past and present!

This is a Monday Mailer card I received last week.  The center is cut out and is a "shaker" card.  It is filled with silver beads.

This card is from October's Monday Mailer and uses Circle Circus.  I need to pull my stamp set out and use it!  But I love this Soft Suede and Crushed Curry!

This is another card from October.  My Monday Mailer partner sent these last two cards to me last week to catch up since she got too busy during October to send the cards on time.  I just love this Medallion stamp with the Chalking Technique.

As promised .... pictures of Old Salem!

Told you I'd be back!!

Here are a few pictures from Old Salem.

This one is of the ovens in the bakery and the Sugar Cake that is ready to go in the oven.  That Sugar Cake is to die for!!   We ended up buying 2 the first day and 1 the second day!

The bakers are working on the fresh bread.  This is Raisin Bread which they are putting a whipped confectionate topping on each loaf!   We bought a loaf of this and it is delicious for breakfast!

These are old Hobby Horses that are in the Toy Museum.

Sonny & Ashley standing under The Mickey Coffee Pot.  It was build in 1858 and used to stand outside a tin shop in Old Salem.

Missing in Action

Sorry I've been MIA (Missing In Action) but I've been ubber-busy this week!!  We drove to Chapel Hill on Monday & met Ashley and friends for lunch.  Then traveled to Raleigh to go to Archivers.  It was a nice store but not as great as I had imagined it to be from all I'd heard.  I actually only bought a couple of things - and mostly for my sister!!  Tuesday and Wednesday were spent in Winston Salem at Old Salem Village (a Moravian village).  It was really neat.  I'll share a few pictures when I get them downloaded.  On Tuesday, the demonstrations were all from the 18th century and on Wednesday, from the 19th century.  Tuesday was a beautiful day but Wednesday was cold and rainy all day ... bummer.  Thursday, Ashley and I had a little time to play in my stamp room.  She is trying to get a couple of scrapbooks done for friends who are expecting little boys.  We met Sonny for lunch; then headed up to Hickory to the furniture mart to look for furniture for her new house.  Then, back to Mooresville for the Stamp of the Month class at Stampers Alley.  As soon as we finished that, we met Sonny, Marianne and her son, Harrison to watch the Panther game (boo ... they lost).  Friday it was on to the Southern Living Christmas Show in Charlotte ... after eating a great lunch in downtown Charlotte at Mertz Heart and Soul (yummy fried chicken and southern style veggies!)  Today, we are picking up my Mom and getting a pedicure, going for wine tasting and having lunch in Mooresville!

Whew!  I'll need a vacation soon!  But, I promise to post some great cards later this afternoon!

Northwood Cards for Christmas

Here are a couple of more Christmas cards I have made.  This first one uses the SU embossing folder, Petals A Plenty.  The stamp set is from Northwoods.  I will be teaching a Northwoods class at my LSS in December so I have been playing around with the stamps.  The snowflake is from SU's snowflake punch .... easy peasy!!

This next card is also a Northwoods stamp.  I just love this snowman!!  This time I used SU's Finial Press embossing folder with Bashful Blue, Real Red and Brillant Blue cardstock.  The snowman is watercolored with my SU markers.

Christmas Cards

I have been working on a few Christmas cards.  Aren't they fun to make?  Just wish I had someone who would sit down and address them for me and put a little note inside!  I used to send out a Christmas "newsy" letter letting everyone know what we had been up to during the year, but doesn't seem like there's much to say anymore!  So, that's one thing I can cross off my list!

This first card is made with the Patterned Pines SU set.  I embossed the card ... except for the center oval ... with my Big Shot and Cuttlebug embossing folder.  Then I used the Nestabilities and cut out a thin scallop oval to put around it.  The trees have Stickles on them - hard to see in the scan.

This card I just love the way it came together and it was by accident!  I stamped the Delightful Decorations in gold ink and popped up the red one in the middle.  I punched small holes to thread the cording through.  Then I used Baroque Motifs to do the scrolls at the top.  I stamped in red first; then, using my Stamp-a-ma-jig, I overstamped in gold off-setting it just a tad.  The red scallop border is also popped up.

This is another card using the Delightful Decorations stamp.  With the Ornament Punch, they are so easy to punch out!  I embossed 2 of the ornaments and popped up the middle one. The ribbon is from the mini catalog (Sleigh Bells) and the DSP is Holiday Lounge.

Old Salem trip

Well, things didn't work out so good for my Steelers today.  Ben just wasn't on his game.  But at least the Panthers won today.

I'm headed to Chapel Hill / Raleigh tomorrow.  Ashley is taking her college boards tomorrow in Chapel Hill and then is taking a 2 week leave to spend Thanksgiving with us.  We are driving down tomorrow and will spend the night in Chapel Hill.  I hope to go to Archivers in Raleigh tomorrow.  I have heard so much about that store and want to check it out for myself!!  Tuesday we're headed to Winston Salem for a couple of days.  We are going to Old Salem.  I have never been before but I love those Moravian cookies!  Hope to do some Christmas shopping while there.

So, if you don't hear from me for a couple of days, that is why.

Steelers vs Cincy today

I'll be headed to Big Al's in Mooresville shortly in all my Pittsburgh gear!  Big Al's is the local watering hole that calls itself a Steeler bar.  That's still debatable in my opinion, but there's usually a good crowd there watching THE game.  Today is a big one against Cincinnati.  We are tied with them in the division with a record of 6 wins / 2 losses.  The Steelers have won five games in a row, the second longest winning streak in the league, and have not lost at home since Nov. 9, 2008, against the Indianapolis Colts, a span of 10 games, including playoffs. The Bengals ended an eight-game losing streak to the Steelers in their stadium with a 23-20 victory on Sept. 27, the first time our coach (Mike Tomlin) has lost to the Bengals. The Bengals are 3-0 on the road and 4-0 in the AFC North this season.

We've got to stop their quarterback, Carson Palmer!!  Hopefully, I'll be singing my song a lot today -

"Here we go Steelers, here we go!"

Monday Mailer/ Thanksgiving Cards to Share

I have a few cards to share that I have either made in the NC Monday Mailer program.  October's theme was using the Big Shot or Cuttlebug and November's theme is Winter Holiday cards.

This is the last October Monday Mailer that I sent.  I don't think I have shared it with you.  If so, you get to see it again!!

I used Dusty Durango cardstock and ribbon with DSP from the Mini Catalog (Autumn Meadows).  The stamp is from the Hostess set, The More the Merrier.  The turquoise is half of a Big Shot Top Note die.

This one is one of my favorites!  It is my November Monday Mailer using the single stamp "Gobble Gobble"  I love that you can just buy single stamps!  This one is found in the Holiday Mini Catalog on page 31, but also check out the single stamps in the big catalog on page 208.  I again used the DSP from the Mini Catalog - this paper is just perfect for fall!  I stamped Mr Turkey several times in Chocolate Chip, More Mustard and Dusty Durango and popped him up (see detailed picture below).

Today's Class

I taught another class today at my local stamp store.  It was another box and set of 4 cards.  I got the directions from Andrea Walford (you can find her blog in my sidebar).  Here is a picture of the project that we made using various stamps and papers sold at my LSS.

Here is the project that I made using Stampin' Up paper and the Fifth Avenue stamp set:

She got the house!

Yay!!  Our daughter is moving forward with the house of her choice!  Several of you have asked about her and I didn't want to post anything until we knew for sure.  She made an offer on a house in San Antonio a little over a week ago and for a week they played the bidding game.  Her realtor was worried that the house would not appraise out at the price they agreed upon.  But, the inspection and appraisal were both done on Monday.  The inspector sent her the report on Tuesday and there are only a few items that need taken care of - the largest one being loose shingles on the roof.  The appraisal came in last night and it appraised out at close to the agreed upon price.  Ashley's realtor sure knows what she is doing because the asking price started out $35,000 more than the agreed upon price.  Yes, it was definitely over-priced to begin with.  It is an older house - build in 1950 but has been updated with about 2200 sq. feet with 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms and a pool!  Guess she'll be hiring a pool boy!  She is scheduled to close November 30 but will rent it back to the girl who lives there now for a week.  Ashley plans on moving in December 7 and being there for Christmas!  We can't wait to see her new house and spend Christmas with her in her first house.

Veterans Day

It is not lost on me that the memorial for the Fort Hood dead in the worst attack in US history on a military base came just one day prior to Veterans Day. An act of war in the fight for our civilization.

What can be said to these unsung heroes who put their lives on the line every day for the idea, the principle, the morality that is America?

I stand in awe, deeply grateful. And while my words are inadequate, the men and women of the armed forces who serve (and served) this great nation are always in the minds and hearts of patriotic Americans who love this country.

THANK YOU!

A Mile High Win!

I was a little nervous about Monday night's game, but guess I didn't need to be!!  We decided to stay at home and watch the game instead of joining fellow Pittsburgh fans at Big Al's last night.  I put on my new Bradshaw Jersey that Ashley gave me for my birthday and settled down in my easy chair.  The first half I was still a little worried.  The Steelers offense didn’t do much in the first half but was full throttle in the final 30 minutes. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 130 yards in the second half.  Ben Roethlisberger completed 15 of 20 for 184 yards in the second half.  The cherry on the top of all this was a five-minute, 74-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, which was capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward. This play was spectacular because as Ward caught the ball, Denver cornerback Champ Bailey was lined up to make a textbook tackle. Ward leaped over him and left Bailey grasping at air.

Wow, what an athlete!!  Ward then ran to the stands and tossed the ball to a guy wearing a No. 86 jersey which is par for the course for him.  I think they get fined for giving the ball away, but who cares??

The Steelers defense is back!! Troy Polamalu, who was injured early in the season, has been a major difference. He was flying all over the field last night.  The Steel Hurtin' defense rose up in the mile-high altitude in Denver to deliver a crushing victory last night, the team's fifth consecutive win.  The Steelers dominated the Broncos and won, 28-10.

The victory lifted the Steelers' record to 6-2 and a tie with Cincinnati atop the AFC North Division.   The Bengals???  Are you kidding me?  What is this world coming to??

The Steelers are primed and ready for a showdown for first place in the AFC North with Cincinnati on Sunday at Heinz Field.  I'll be watching at Big Al's with Sonny and Ashley who will be in town!  If you are a Steeler fan and live in the area, won't you join us?

One Sheet Wonder Class

I am teaching a One Sheet Wonder class tomorrow night at my local stamp store.  I just love the card but the prep work for this class has been tremendous.  What was I thinking!!  But, it will be fun!  I have a full class tomorrow so we will be offering the class again December 1st.  Let me know if you are interested in signing up (if you live close to Mooresville).

Here are the samples:

The paper is by Bo Bunny.  We will make 2 of each card (5 different designs), 2 gift cards and a bag.  Probably in class we will only do one of each card depending on the time and you will finish the second card at home.

Snowflakes

I just love this card I made today -

It is a white card with a Bashful Blue layer (4" x 5 1/4") and a piece of DSP (SU Merry Moments) layer (5" x 3 3/4").  I used my Nestabilities to cut the Ovals and stamped "Peace, Love, Joy" (All Holidays - such a great versatile set!).  The snowflakes are also Nestabilities.  I ran them through the Big Shot and - keeping them in the stencil - using a sponge dauber, pounced Ranger Broken China on the white parts.  After doing that to all of them, I popped them out.  Then I ran Crystal Effects (could use a clear drying glue too) over the snowflakes and sprinkled Chunky Glitter all over them.  Let dry and put them together.  I took a piece of wire and ran it through the buttons and through the holes in the middle of the snowflakes and tied it off in the back.  Then I curled the wire and pulled it out on the side - hard to see it in the picture. (if you click on the card, you can enlarge it & you will see the curled wire)

Open House Make and Takes and Tags

Today the local stamp store in Mooresville had their annual Open House.  I met my sister over there and we did a couple of make and takes (see them below), had a "calorie-conscious" lunch (salad bar) and did some shopping.  I so enjoy spending time with my sister now that I live close.  That is something we have never been able to do unless I was here in NC visiting.  I left NC right after I got married and she was only about 13 at the time and I have been gone over 30 years!.  So, this is definitely a perk to living here now.

The Make and Takes from today.

I also participated in a Tag Swap at the stamp store and received my tags back today.  There are some very talented ladies out there!!

These tags were made by my sister, Marianne (the Christmas village one) and by me (Christmas tree).
