Gift Tag Holders
My daughter has been off all last week doing some serious house hunting in San Antonio. She will close on her Bethesda condo November 9! She narrowed her Texas houses down to about 8 on Saturday and went out with her realtor and good friend, Lisa, to make her final decision. She made an offer last night so we are hoping it goes through and she will able to buy and get moved in before Christmas. The house she is making an offer on actually has a swimming pool which will be great for the Texas heat, BUT .... the pool has the Texas A&M symbol in the tile on the bottom of the pool! It will definitely make for a conversation piece. If you know anything about Texas, you know that people there are divided in 2 camps - UT or A&M (kind of like NC State & UNC).) Ashley went to Trinity and has friends from UT & A&M so it's no biggie to her!!
At Christmas, we all need gift tags to attach to all those presents we spend too much money on! I have made a couple of holders for gift tags. These would make a nice little hostess gift.

Halloween Facts and Superstitions
The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.
Superstition ~ In 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it.
Superstition ~ In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl's future husband. (In some versions of this legend, confusingly, the opposite was true: The nut that burned away symbolized a love that would not last.)
Superstition ~ Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night, she would dream about her future husband. Young women tossed apple-peels over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands' initials; tried to learn about their futures by peering at egg yolks floating in a bowl of water; and stood in front of mirrors in darkened rooms, holding candles and looking over their shoulders for their husbands' faces.

Beautiful Fall Colors
CARROT FINGER FOOD
Ingredients
* vegetable dip
* 4 long carrots
* 1 medium carrot
* softened cream cheese
* sliced-almond
* baby carrots
Instructions
1. To prepare them, just fill a serving bowl with your favorite
vegetable dip. Wash and peel 4 long carrots for fingers
and 1 medium carrot for a thumb.
2. With a paring knife (a parent's job), cut a flat, shallow notch
in the tip of each carrot. Then use a dab of dip or softened
cream cheese to glue a sliced-almond fingernail atop each notch.
3. Stick the fingers in the dip, as shown, and serve with
plenty of peeled baby carrots for dipping.

Birthday Cards
The card Sonny gave me had the most beautiful verse, I just have to share it. We always tease him that he doesn't really read cards all the way through but I know he read this one before he bought it!
Once there was this guy; A nice guy, really.
And he met this girl. An incredible girl - truly amazing.
So naturally the guy falls head over heels in love with her,
and pretty soon they're picking out china patterns and rings
and there's a weding and the starry-eyed couple rides off into what will surely be a rosy future.

Okay, so now some time has passed and the guy is living in that future.
He's still married to this girl, but now their life includes a lot of stuff -
appliances and bills and loads of laundry and home repair projects.
But between all the to-dos and have-tos, there are these moments
when the guy stops for a minute and looks around him.

He looks at his wife, who is still truly amazing,
he looks at their life together, all the ways and different directions it's grown,
he looks at all the responsibilities he's got, and he thinks to himself, so, this is my life.
And then he thinks,
I am one helluva lucky guy.
And then I got a great one from my daughter although it killed her to have to buy a card. Her stamping supplies are in storage still so she wasn't able to make me a card. But she found a great one that says it all about our relationship!
Happy Birthday to my go-everywhere, do-everything, tell-each-other-anything ...
couldn't-be-a-better, always-and-forever friend to the end.

Beach pictures
The Shag dance (a lot like the Jitterbug) is the state dance of South Carolina. (see the video HERE) Couples who have danced together a long time and do the shag are just magical to watch. There was a couple at our reunion who we all enjoyed watching dance - Sheila and Ham McGarity! Sheila was a cheerleader in my class and Ham graduated a year before we did. They are actually in the Shag Hall of Fame! Yes, there really is such a thing. There are shag clubs all over North and South Carolina and they dance and teach others to do the shag. I grew up doing my own version of the Beach Shag. When we moved back to NC, I enrolled Sonny and I in shag classes while he had gone back to Washington to finish the closing on our house. Well, he was not thrilled about taking the classes, but he did .... grudgingly! I have tried to get him to take some more refresher classes but with no luck! In fact, he told me this weekend that he had been afraid that when he died he would go to hell .... well, now he is afraid when he dies, he will have to listen to beach music for the rest of his life!

Reunion time at the beach
Sonny and I have already scoped out a Pittsburgh bar to watch the football game tomorrow so we are set for some football!
We have been eating some wonderful seafood. We drove to Calabash (NC) last night and had some delicious flounder and shrimp. I'm hoping I can convince him to go back tonight. Last night I had fried flounder ... tonight I would like some broiled! The NC line is only about 10 minutes away so it is not a long drive and Calabash is the Seafood Capital of this area!! It is wall to wall seafood restaurants.
It has been cold and rainy the whole time we have been here until today! The sun came out and as long as you are in the sun, it is nice and warm. There is a bit of a breeze blowing that is a cold wind, but all in all, it is nice. We took a long walk this morning on the beach and Sonny is sitting out on our balcony now reading. Our room overlooks the ocean and we have left the sliding glass door open at night and sleep to the sound of the waves! What a life!!

Weight Watcher Recipes

1/2 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
2 Tbsp apple-cider vinegar
2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 medium head red cabbage, shredded
2 cups shredded carrots
2 medium Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into matchstick strips
1/3 cup golden raisins
Stir the mayonnaise, vinegar, and sugar together in a large bowl until
well mixed. Stir in the cabbage, carrots, apples, and raisins. Let stand 15
minutes before serving. Serve at once or cover with plastic wrap and
refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 2 hours.

2 slices center-cut bacon, crisp cooked and coarsely crumbled
1 scallion, finely chopped
1.Place the potatoes in a medium saucepan with enough water to cover by 3
inches; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until fork-tender, 20–25
minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan.
2.Add the sour cream, milk, salt, and pepper; mash with a potato masher
until the potatoes become creamy. Stir in the cheddar, bacon, and scallion.

Rosemary-Mustard Crusted Beef Roast
Makes 8 servings (3 slices each)

2 Tbsp seasoned dried bread crumbs
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
2 tsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 (2-pound) boneless eye-round roast, trimmed
1.Preheat the oven to 400°F. Spray a small roasting pan with nonstick spray.
2.Combine the bread crumbs, mustard, rosemary, oil, salt, and pepper in a
small bowl. Rub the mixture over the top and sides of the beef. Place in the
pan and roast, uncovered, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the
center of the roast registers 145°F for medium-rare, about 1 hour. Transfer
to a cutting board and let stand 10 minutes. Cut the roast into 24 slices.

The first Jack-o-Lanterns were made in Ireland out of hollowed-out turnips. A piece of coal was inserted into the hollow and the "lantern" was meant to guide the way of poor old Jack who wasn't welcome in Heaven but was also barred from entering Hell for tricking the devil. According to legend, the devil gave this crude lamp to Jack so that he could walk the earth forever in limbo. When the Irish brought this tradition to America, they apparently decided that pumpkins were much easier to carve than turnips, and the modern-day Jack-o-Lantern was born!
Although there are many theories on the origin and history of Halloween, it is generally accepted that Halloween dates back to an ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, or the Celtic New Year. It was believed that the spirits of everyone who had died during the year would return on the eve of Samhain to seek living bodies to possess for the following year. The Celts would dress in ghoulish costumes and hold noisy revels in an attempt to frighten away these spirits. Food and drink was also offered to pacify the dead. There are many tales of unfortunate souls being burned at the stake because they were perceived to have been possessed by one of the returning spirits. Around the turn of the first century AD, Romans abandoned this custom of human sacrifice in favor of the burning of effigies.
- According to the National Retail Federation's Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, the most popular Halloween costume in 2004 was Spiderman, with 2.15 million children dressing as their favorite superhero. Other popular costumes included princesses (1.8 million children), witches (1.3 million) and vampires (899,000).

Bacon Cheddar Mashed Potatoes

Makes 4 servings (1/2 cup each)

I don't have it yet so I can't give you any first hand knowledge. BUT .... it is on my birthday want list. My birthday is coming up in 3 weeks and I have already mentioned it to Sonny. (Although I think it might have fallen on deaf ears ..... Ashley .... hope you are reading this!!)
I accompanied Sonny to the doctor's office today for that wonderful colonoscopy. The procedure itself is not bad - you're out and don't feel anything. If they could just come up with a better solution to the "prep work." But, when you consider it's a test for colon cancer, I guess it's all worth it. The doc did find a polyp and it was sent off for evaluation. Unfortunately, that puts him on the "short list" and he'll have to do it again in 5 years!! Maybe they'll come up with something better by then!
After the procedure, we enjoyed a good breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then headed to the movies. Our choice today was The Informant with Matt Damon. Uhhh ... not so good, in my opinion!! I was falling asleep in the first hour so I got up and wandered around the theatre trying to find another film more to my liking!! I found the Jennifer Anniston movie Love Happens. I really enjoyed it! Yep, it was a chick flick but I like chick flicks!! Another thing I loved about the movie was all the great views of Seattle! As you know, we moved to NC from there 3 years ago. It is one beautiful place! Anyway, I would recommend the movie although it is not getting good reviews.
