August Monday Mailer #2

Here's the Monday Mailer I made for Naomi this week.  Our theme is fall.  I don't have a lot of SU fall sets (except ones that are retired) so I may be looking to get one of the new leaf sets from the catty.  But in the meantime, this Autumn Days set will have to do.  I like this set and think it is pretty versatile.

I sponged the white circle (from a Sizzix die) with More Mustard, Daffodil Delight, and Soft Suede.  I used a sticky note punch out for the moon and sponged around it.  The wheat is stamped in Espresso as is the pheasant (and cut out and popped up with dimensionals).

Last week when Ashley was here, we met Marianne's boys at the ice cream shop in Mooresville.  Ashley had not seen Harrison since she had been here.  She saw Derek at his birthday celebration on Wednesday.  I got a great picture of them:

Then they had a discussion as to how tall everyone was.  I think she was on her tip-toes in the picture!  It is an ongoing joke in the family that Ashley is short!  Too bad we didn't have a measuring tape!

Segway Charlotte

I promised more details on our Segway Tour of Charlotte.  It was really cool!  I got the trips for us through Groupon.  Groupon is a great site!  It is free to sign up.  They list great deals every day and they have to have enough people to sign up for it to be a "go".  For instance, I paid $30 each for the segway tour and it would have been $50 if I'd gotten it on my own.  If you are interested in signing up, click here - http://www.groupon.com/r/uu4114616.  (I get a $10 referral fee if you click it so thanks!)

I wasn't nervous about the segway bike until everyone kept asking me if I thought I could do it without falling off!  It is a litte scary at first to balance on it.  They give you a little 20 minute training and start out pretty slow.  I never fell completely off the thing - only once did I just jump off but I was trying to turn and go up a little ramp all at the same time.  We started right in the heart of uptown Charlotte at the corners of Church & MLK. From there we went through the Wells Fargo Cultural campus and down to the Square (the corner of Trade & Tryon.)   We cruised around the Panther football stadium by the practice fields.  We were supposed to go under some bridges but it had been raining and the water was too high.   We drove through Frazier Park and the Irwin Creek Greenway, places I didn't even know existed downtown!  Then we went through the Historic Fourth Ward district and looked at some of the historical homes there.  We went through the oldest cemetary in Charlotte - Elmwood Cemetary.  We had stopped to take a quick rest in the cemetary when Ashley spyed some graves of my ancestors!  My maternal grandmother was a Kuester and there were a whole bunch of them there.  I went over to take a closer look and took some pictures.  It started raining on us about 30 minutes into the tour but we kept on going.  At one point, the rain was coming down really heavy so we took refuge in a building downtown.  But we were good sports and kept on going once the rain let up a little bit.  I would really recommend this tour even if you have lived in Charlotte all your life!!  Check in your city if you don't live here and see if there is a Segway Tour for you!  It is really a lot of fun!!

After the tour, we met Margaret and Graham at Black Finn Restaurant downtown for lunch.  If you have never eaten there, I would recommend it.  They have great burgers and beer!  After lunch, Sonny took them to the airport for their flight back to Dallas.  Ashley & I had the rest of the day to explore Charlotte before the Paul McCartney concert that night.  We walked all over Charlotte and I pointed out things I remembered from growing up here.  We visited the Harvey B Gantt Museum for African Americans.  I have been to other museums in Charlotte but this was one I had not visited.  It is worth the visit if you enjoy art.  Our best discovery of the afternoon was the Press Wine Restaurant/Tapas on Trade Street.  The place is a little quirky with a great selection of wines and food.  They also serve beer so Sonny should like it too.  I can't wait for visitors to come see us so we can take them here!!  I'll look forward to going there in cooler weather and sitting outside with my wine.  Won't you come join me?

Monday Mailer X 2

Here are a couple of Monday Mailers that I have received the last couple of weeks.  This first one uses the darling Owl Punch.  I really love this punch.  This was my last July card from Arial.  It's simple but oh so cute!

I'm sad

Well, I'm sad today.  We took Ashley to the airport EARLY this morning.  She had a 6:10 flight to Texas which meant we got up about 3:30 to leave the house at 4:15 a.m.!!  I was really surprised at how many people were at the airport that early in the morning!   After we dropped her off, we came back and got a couple more hours of sleep.

Sonny and I went to a retirement seminar today sponsored by the Golden Boys.   It was pretty interesting.  It had to do with finding balance in your life.  Each person (or couple) should assess their own balance and brainstorm the areas of your life that are important to you and put these on a wheel (see below).  Then you rate each of these areas to determine if your "wheel" is balanced.  After that, you should plan a 30-day action plan to help get your life in balance. 

What would you put on your wheel?  The items I included on mine were:  Financial Security; Family; Friends/Social Life; Fun; Giving Back to the Community; Health/Fitness; Travel; Love.  If you would like to make your own Wheel, check out the article HERE.  There is a template included in the information.

Wednesday was my nephew, Derek's, 21st birthday.  The family met at Kobe Steak House for his birthday celebration.  That is the restaurant that Derek and Harrison always choose for their birthday dinners.  Almost the whole family was there.  Unfortunately, Harrison was at soccer try-outs (YEAH - he made Varsity!!) so he wasn't able to join us.  Here is a scrapbook page I made from the pictures I took that night using My Digital Studio:  (you can click on the picture to see it close up - just remember to hit the arrow button to come back to my blog)

These are the birthday cards that Ashley and I made for Derek:

This one was mine.  I used a Jumbo (retired) Wheel for the bottom piece.  Unfortunately, I did not have a beer mug, so used the drink from Tropical Party.

This was Ashley's card.  Isn't the Sock Monkey the cutest?  He has new accessories in the new catalog - check them out on page 83.

OK - I'm falling asleep at my desk.  It's time to hit the sack!!  Good night & sweet dreams!

Still Around

I haven't forgotten you my friends!  I'm just trying to cram every moment in with my daughter.  Tomorrow is our last day.  We will be taking her to airport on Friday for a 6 a.m. flight!!   I can't believe how fast our visit has been!  Yesterday we picked up my mom and the three of us had pampered ourselves with pedicures.  Then it was off to lunch at a very nice Italian restaurant in Mooresville.  I have been there twice and both times had Salmon Picatta which is wonderful!  We went out on the boat late yesterday and met my sister for dinner on the lake.  After dinner, we just floated and "vegged" ... each of us reading our books until about 9:00.  It was really nice and probably the first "down time" we've had since she's been here.  This morning I took Ashley to my Newcomers Coffee and introduced her to all my friends there.  We thought we'd go back out on the lake after lunch but the weather didn't look promising so just hung out at the house until dinner time.  Marianne's oldest son turned 21 today so the whole family met at Kobe Steakhouse for his birthday celebration.  It is hard to believe he is 21! 

I have only made 1 card this week and that was for Derek's birthday.  I will post it tomorrow.  It is in my camera downstairs and I am too sleepy to go get it tonight!

I'm Back!

I'm back from our weekend trip to the mountains.  Ashley was able to see the true meaning of the Smokey Mountains.  The fog (or smoke) hung in the mountains most of the time we were there.  I was a little afraid our motel would be a little "sketchy" but it was ok.  It was really old (think 1948!) but clean and a nice place to rest our heads at night.  They catered a lot to bikers and there were quite a few old timers there with their Harleys.  Made me start thinking about how fun that would be to tool around the mountains on the back of a motorcycle!   Our motel was between Cherokee and Bryson City which worked well for us.  We had reservations for the outdoor drama, Unto These Hills, in Cherokee on Thursday night but we really didn't need them.  The place was probably not even half full.  We did discover that there are not many restaurants in Cherokee except fast food chains!  We went to one of the few local restaurants to try to get dinner before the play.  We had 1 1/2 hours which we figured was plenty of time.  The restaurant was full but we were seated pretty quickly.  Then we waited for a waitress .... about 15-20 minutes.  We looked around and noticed none of the tables in our area had food on them.  Most of the people did have drinks and silverware but they were all waiting too.  After no sign of a waitress, we got up to leave.  The family at the table next to us told me they had been there 1 1/2 hours!!  Another couple beside us got up and left too - their meal had gotten lost in the kitchen.  So that night, we ended up eating food at the play - popcorn and nachos! 

On the drive up to Cherokee, we drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We stopped and took a short hike to the lookout where we could see Grandfather Mountain.  It was a beautiful day!

We didn't see any real bears but all around Cherokee were painted bears that were pretty neat.  Here is one of them:

On Saturday, we went tubing down the Tuskaseegee River.  It was fun except when it started raining, thundering and lightning!  I was truly freaking out.  But I didn't have a choice - either continue to paddle down the river or get under the trees on the bank of the river.  Sonny and Ashley convinced me I was safer staying in my rubber tube and paddling but believe me, there were a few tears coming down my face!!

If we ever go back, I will rent a raft instead of a tube.  It was fun but there wasn't enough current running and my arms got really tired of paddling.  At least with a raft, I would have a paddle.  The rafts were flying by us.  But we did really good staying on our rafts through the rapids .... well, at least the females in the group.  Sonny tipped over THREE times going over the rapids! 

My time with Ashley is flying by!  I can't believe I only have 3 more days with her.  We spent time with my mom today.  We picked her up at her water aerobics class and took her to lunch.  Then I had to take her home and break the news to her that one of her best friends in Charlotte had died this morning.  Luckily, she had gone to see her last week and talked to her again on Friday but it was really hard on her.  This is the last of the group of friends she had in Charlotte that she and my dad used to pal around with.  It sure sucks getting old, doesn't it?

Just a quick post before we hit the road - heading up to the mountains for the weekend.  Thought you would enjoy a few pictures of my wonderful night last night!!

The concert was WONDERFUL!  I didn't think I'd know too many of the songs because I am more of a Beatles fan than a McCartney fan but there were only about 7-8 songs that I didn't recognize.  I am in love!  The old guy looks darn good for 68 years old!!

Accordian Card Holder

Last week Splitcoast Stampers had a tutorial for an Accordian Card Holder that I decided to make.  I've always loved this retired DSP from SU - just wish I had more - so I used it to make it and coordinated the Baja Blue cards with the holder.  If you want to make one, HERE is the tutorial.

Gonna be Sporadic!

Just a quick post this morning before I head to the airport to pick up my daughter.  My postings this week will probably be very sporadic.  Ashley is coming in today and will be here until the end of next week.  I will be trying to spend as much time with her as possible since this will be the last time I will see her for about a year.  She will be reporting to Ft Hood in August for deployment to Iraq in September.  As Scarlette says,  I will think about that tomorrow!

Yesterday was just one of those days!  I was supposed to play bridge at 10 am.  I was all dressed and ready to go by 9.  I came downstairs to make my WW mocha smoothie.  I was going to drink it on the way to bridge.  Well, I was putting the top on the blender container when it scooted across the counter all over me and the floor.  It was like seeing a movie in slow motion - I saw it but couldn't stop it!   Of course, I had just washed & waxed my kitchen floor the night before.  (You never mess up when your floor is already a mess!)  Sonny helped me clean it up and I went back upstairs to get re-dressed.  Then I made another drink and I was on my way.  I was still on time!!  It ended up that one of the gals who was supposed to play bridge with us forgot and we only had 10 players (we were already one short anyway).  So, another gal & I volunteered to leave so they would just have 2 table of 8.  It worked out because I had found out on Saturday that our friends, Margaret & Graham were in Charlotte.  Sonny was going to pick them up on Monday for a couple of days at our house.  They want to see Ashley before she deploys.  I was in time to meet Sonny in town and ride to Charlotte with him.  We took our friends to the Penguin for lunch in Charlotte - a great hamburger "joint".  So, a good time was had and the rest of the day turned out fine!

Tomorrow Ashley, Sonny & I are taking a segway tour of Charlotte!  I am excited.  Ashley & I will hang around in Charlotte because we have tickets to see Paul McCartney tomorrow night!!
